On October 24,2026, the Economics Department of St. Mary’s University organized an Economics Department Gathering under the theme “Learn, Connect, Grow,” bringing together students from different batches to strengthen academic engagement, professional development, and departmental unity.

The program commenced with opening remarks delivered by Fetene Shimelis, Head of the Economics Department, who welcomed participants and highlighted the purpose of the gathering. A keynote address was subsequently delivered by Ato Behaylu Tamiru, Academic Vice President, on “The Role and Future of Economists.” The presentation emphasized career opportunities, professional responsibilities, and the vital contribution economists make to national economic development.

A key feature of the event was the Internship and University Culture Experience SharingSession, during which student representatives from the 2016 EC and 2017 EC batches shared their academic journeys, internship experiences, and practical advice for fellow students. The session created a platform for knowledge exchange and mentorship among students.

The gathering also featured a variety of engaging activities, including a student competition designed to test participants’ knowledge, teamwork, and critical-thinking skills. In addition, students from the 2017 Batch presented poetry works that encouraged creativity and self-expression.

An inter-batch debate on contemporary economic issues provided students with an opportunity to sharpen their analytical, communication, and teamwork skills while exchanging diverse perspectives on economic matters.

The program concluded with closing remarks delivered by Student Union President Ferhan Mohammed, who summarized the key lessons of the event and expressed appreciation to all participants and organizers. The gathering reinforced the department’s commitment to fostering academic excellence, collaboration, and professional growth among Economics students.
